The RDA for calcium is 1,000 mg in adults, and increases to 1,200 mg a day in women older than fifty. A German study in 2010 found that only 32 percent of Americans and 50 percent of Germans met their daily requirement of calcium.

Magnesium

Magnesium deficiencies often go together with calcium deficiencies. Magnesium is a cofactor in hundreds of reactions in the body and deficiencies can have a wide impact on health and disease. Magnesium absorption is dependent on a healthy digestive tract. Deficiencies are associated with autoimmune thyroid, intestinal inflammation, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.

The recommended dosage ranges from 400 to 420 mg per day in adult males. In women, the RDA ranges from 310 to 360 mg a day. Taking too much magnesium is unlikely, although it may cause diarrhea.
